Your First Sweater

This class is for first time sweater knitter who wants to learn top down sweater knitting. This is a great way to learn to knit sweaters, since top down sweaters are simple to adjust to your body's unique proportions: easy to adjust body and sleeve length, and width! If you choose to, you can knit a sweater for someone else: baby-adult sizes are available for all sweater patterns provided.

This is a 3 session class, you are paying for all three sessions up front, and will be expected to meet specific markers each session to stay on track with your sweater.

Before session #1 you will need to:

• Choose a pattern from the list below.
• Choose your yarn (staff will assist).
• Knit your gauge swatch (if you need help with this part sign up and attend our Sunday Help before session 1).

The Pattern

You can choose from the following patterns. We are featuring Tin Can Knits patterns for this series for a few reasons:

• They are size inclusive, and their patterns are well tested.
  
• There is a corresponding Tin Can Knits app that we highly recommend you download, it will allow you to enter in the size you are making so all of the other numbers go away, and it has tutorials.
• They have several pullover and cardigan options that will be excellent for a beginning sweater knitter.

Please choose from this pattern list, and let our staff know which pattern you are making, and which size (they can help with this as well) and they will show you the the appropriate yarns to choose from. Click each link to be directed to each pattern's Ravelry page where you can see more images and information of each design.

• Simple Sweater - shown in grey
• Classic Cardigan - shown in orange/purple
• Flax Worsted- shown in light brown
• Harvest- shown in orange/caramel color

Materials:

• Pattern- buy the pattern through Ravelry or directly through the Tin Can Knits app. Come with the pattern on your ipad and/or a printed version of your pattern.
• Yarn- depending on which pattern you choose we will assist you in choosing the correct yarn and quantity in the shop at least 3 days before class begins. *Don’t choose dark colored yarn for your first sweater.
• Knitting needles required to get gauge (we can help with this too when you buy your yarn)
• Scissors
• Darning needle
• Stitch markers- at least 9 markers
• Tape measure
• Pen and paper is always useful to write down notes. 

Please buy your materials at Cast Away. Be sure to show up to class on time with materials ready, and swatch made (first session only).

Experience Needed: You should already have these basic skills: knit, purl, increase, decrease, knitting in the round, bind off. 

Homework: Knit a gauge swatch- if you need help sign up for Sunday Help before session 1.
